Thanks to SEGA's 30th anniversary celebrations, there's a big year ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog. With Sonic Colors: Ultimate arriving this September, a new retro collection called Sonic Origins and numerous crossovers, SEGA's Sonic Central reveal ended with a brief tease about Sonic 2022.

Rumoured to be called Sonic Rangers, we didn't really get much of a look during that stream. We saw Sonic running through a forest really fast, a mysterious symbol (as seen above) and not much else. Sonic Team Head Says That Recent Sonic Game Announcement Was "Premature"

Speaking with Japanese outlet 4Gamer (translated by Nintendo Everything), Iizuka confirmed:

We haven’t announced a brand new action game for the Sonic series since Sonic Forcesand that caused fans to worry. While it was a bit premature, I wanted to at least take the occasion of the 30th anniversary to announce that a brand new title was in development.

Notably, that's not the only Iizuka talks about regarding this upcoming entry. When pressed about any meaning behind the trailer's mysterious symbol, he confirmed:

It is something symbolic that appears in the game, but the meaning is still a secret. However, I will say that it’s not something one would figure out through deduction. we’ll eventually share more details, so please wait a little longer.

As of yet, we don't have many more official details outside of a 2022 release date. Due to launch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, we'll keep you informed when we learn more.
