The first character you start with in Touhou Lost Word is Reisen Udongein Inaba, who starts as a one-star friend. However, the ability to fully upgrade them means the starter friend can greatly increase in power.

Touhou Lost Word Spell Cards explained

One of the most important combat elements in Touhou Lost Word is the strategic use of spell cards. These are powerful boosts that combine a range of attacks to provide a multi-pronged assault on enemies. They’re most effective when used in combination with the boost ability that appears during difficult combat scenarios.

As with the characters, there’s an extensive number of spell cards in the game. They’re unique to each character too, meaning there are limitless combinations with which to arrange your team. As such, you’ll need to level up your individual character to get a hold of the best spell cards. You’ll start unlocking them once you rank up the character in question. As such, you’ll need a three-star character to unlock the elusive gold spell cards, which are the most powerful in the game.

How do I unlock all Touhou Lost Word characters?

There are plenty of ways to unlock characters in Touhou Lost Word, but as a game with over eighty playable characters, it’s a mighty challenge to collect them all. As mentioned earlier, you start off by unlocking Reisen Udongein Inaba by finishing the game’s tutorial. You can also claim two extra characters for free thanks to pre-launch registration tasks. Here’s how to unlock Marisa Kirisame and Reimu Hakurei for free.

  • Sign up for Touhou Lost Word and complete the preliminary tutorial section
  • Instead of opting to play episode two of the prologue, instead click back to the main menu
  • From here, press 'Items' in the top-right of the screen. There will be over forty items to claim here, so it’s easiest to press 'Claim All'
  • Once you’ve clicked through everything, check your 'Friends' menu at the bottom of the screen. You should see the two free characters here

To unlock other characters other than these, you have to purchase them from the game’s shop. This is where the costumed variations of characters are available for sale - but there are only seventeen currently available. You pay for these with god crystals, which cost real money. Therefore, a lot of the characters in Touhou Lost Word are locked behind a paywall. If you want to get all the characters, you’ll have to combine real-life spending with completing in-game objectives.

How do I reroll in Touhou Lost Word?

The initial character roll in Touhou Lost Word can leave a lot to be desired. You’re limited to a set group of characters, and the chances of pulling a powerful friend to start with are low. That’s why rerolling can be a good option - as a chance to get something a bit stronger when you’re starting out.

The reroll process is different based on whether you’re playing on Android or iOS. The Android process is a little more complicated:

  • Head to your device’s storage settings, then tap on Touhou Lost Word
  • Click the ‘Clear Data’ option
  • When you log back into the game, you’ll be invited to make a new account and start from scratch

The iOS process is less scroll-heavy, but a bit more brutish:

  • The only way to reroll on iOS is to completely delete the app and its data from the home screen, then reinstall it

As Touhou Lost Word grows in size and support following its launch in April 2020, the amount of characters and spell cards is only going to increase. It’s a game that’ll reward you for investing in its depth, making the experience even more rewarding.

Touhou Lost World extra mode explained

Once you're ready to try something beyond the main quest mode, it's worth exploring Touhou Lost Word's extra modes. These are a type of endless horde mode, tailored to the character you're playing as. As such, they aren't available for all characters, as the level of individual customisation is relatively high.

The most recent extra mode in Touhou Lost Word is called Hifuu LostWord. This promotional event gives you a shot at unlocking a new skin variants: Lunar War Enchanter Marisa Kirisame. Equally, it boosts your chances of getting Seal Crystals, Fortune Dust, and Scrolls, with their drop rates from the random boxes. That's on top of the game's ongoing half-anniversary celebrations, with plenty of skin variants and giveaways ongoing.

While these extra modes are small, they help increase the variety of gameplay in Touhou Lost Word. Even if you need a break from the main quest, these can help extend your playtime.
