So, does PS5 support 144Hz, for many people looking to upgrade from PS4 or looking for the best monitor for PS5, the answer to this can become an important factor.

With refresh rate and reaction speed being integral in competitive gaming, what exactly are the limitations of gaming on PS5?

Here's what you need to know...

Does PS5 Support 144Hz?

The simple answer is, no, the PS5 does not support a 144Hz refresh rate.

At the moment, the PS5 supports a maximum of 120Hz up to a native 4K resolution.

Will PS5 Support 144Hz In The Future?

Specifications such as 144Hz and 1440p are more commonly found in monitors rather than TVs and in the past, Sony has never supported 'non-TV specs'.

For example, the PS5 does not currently support a 1440p resolution, however does support both 1080p and 4K resolutions.

Meaning that they have essentially 'skipped' supporting a 1440p resolution and it is likely they will offer the same approach with 144Hz as most TVs are either 60Hz or 120Hz.

This was the same for the PS4 Pro, which can also support up to 4K, but does not support 1440p.

Though at the moment it is inaccessible the current PS5 has the potential to play games at 60Hz in an 8K resolution, as far as we are aware, the same cannot be said for 144Hz.

However, there is a chance that in a future reiteration of the console, such as the PS5 Pro, we might see Sony update the hardware to support specifications like 144Hz and 1440p, though we cannot be sure until we have official word on this.

Is 120Hz Good For Competitive Gaming?

While 120Hz is not the fastest refresh rate out there, we'd say it is still good for competitive gaming.

However, unlike PC, where players use various specs, everyone has the same hardware when gaming on PS5, so you will not be disadvantaged at all when playing against other PS5 users if you're running at 120Hz.

In order to access 120fps on PS5, you'll need a TV or monitor that offers a 120Hz refresh rate and if you're looking to play games at 4K on top of that, you'll need an HDMI 2.1 monitor or TV.

Can You Use A 144Hz Monitor On PS5?

Whether a 144Hz monitor will be compatible with the PS5 depends on the monitor itself and even if you do choose to use a 144Hz monitor, you will be downscaled to either 120 or 60Hz while using PS5.
