As far as design goes, it's not the flashiest out of the monitors we've seen, but that could also be very appealing to the more minimal aesthetic-loving there.

There are a number of monitors that have been released recently that also caught our eye...let's take a look at the latest, shall we?
Sony Inzone M9

Design-speaking, it's probably the closest you can get to a 'PS5 design' in a monitor, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.
It's currently available to order at Amazon for £999.
Samsung Odyssey Neo G8

For starters, it's a 32-inch panel with the ability to output at 4K with a 240Hz refresh rate, and handily, it features two HDMI 2.1 ports for connecting it up to your PS5 or Xbox Series X.
In addition, the Odyssey Neo G8 looks to utilise a Quantum Mini-LED backlit panel with an expected 1196 dimming zones that should allow for 2000 nits of peak brightness thanks to QuantumHDR 2000 support.

A 1000R curvature may be a little steep for some, but if you're looking for maximum immersion, then it should be rather good indeed, and push Samsung's offering towards being one of the best curved monitors for gaming out there.
As for its availability, you can currently purchase the new monitor in the US, via Samsung's website, with a global release expected to arrive soon.
For the UK, you can currently pre-order the new monitor directly from Samsung's website, with shipments expected to start from 28 July onwards.
Samsung also announced some other incredible monitors at CES 2022, the Odyssey Ark and the Odyssey G8QNB, which, whilst aren't HDMI 2.1, still look fantastic and should be worth a pickup once released.
Samsung also recently unveiled their Odyssey Neo G7 S32GB75 gaming monitor which appears to be a cheaper alternative to the Neo G8 and features HDMI 2.1 capabilities.
AOC AGON AG274UXP
click to enlargeFor fans of smaller monitors, the AOC AGON AG274UXP looks like a marvellous choice and should pack quite a punch in games.
What you're getting is a 4K Nano IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate that should be able to deliver super-sharp images with a silky smooth output on next-gen consoles and PCs alike.
On the point of sharp images, this is backed up by the point the AGON AG274UXP offers DisplayHDR600, allowing it to feature 600 nits of brightness for crisp images. You'll also find it features Nvidia G-Sync, so any form of screen tearing or stuttering is eliminated.
In addition, a 1ms response time ensures there should be practically no input lag, and could also help to make this one of the best options for competitive gaming, given the power on offer.
If you're after an even faster display, AOC also recently announced the upcoming AGON PRO AG274QZM which features a Mini LED display, QHD resolution, and 240Hz refresh rate.
LG UltraGear 32GQ950

As promised, the almost-borderless monitor comes with a 32-inch and 4k display, making it a good fit for gaming on a console as well as a PC. With HDMI 2.1, the new LG monitor is ready for next-gen consoles - PS5 and Xbox Series X.
You can catch all the action happening in 4k resolution at 144Hz. As the monitor is compatible with G-Sync, you shouldn't have to worry about screen tearing and ghosting. With a 1ms response time, the monitor will keep up with all the fast-paced games.
The Nano IPS panel, coupled with the ATW Polarizer technology, should deliver high colour fidelity. Add DisplayHDR 1000 to the mix and you get wide colour ranges and high nit brightness.
It's not an OLED monitor mind you, which means you may have to opt for LG's 48GQ900 instead, or even the LG C2 TV range, if you're wanting an especially large panel.

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG32UQXE

Compared to the older ROG SWIFT PG32UQX, this new version ups the refresh rate to 160Hz and also utilises an adaptive Mini LED panel, which, whilst halving the number of zones, helps to resist the effects of LED burn-in.
For ports, you're getting a good selection with an HDMI 2.1 port allowing for powerful next-gen console gaming alongside DP 1.4, USB-C, and HDMI 2.0, too.
This ROG SWIFT PG32UQXE also supports G-Sync Ultimate, so you certainly shouldn't be getting any screen tearing, either, which is always a bonus.

While not every HDMI 2.1 monitor packs an OLED display, we are starting to see more and more options enter the market.
OLED displays typically have greater contrast due to their self-illuminating pixels, and they've come a long way in recent years thanks to advancements in overall brightness and picture quality.
Do note though that these OLED monitors are likely to come at an increased cost initially, so it may be worth waiting a bit longer as HDMI 2.1 monitors become more common, as will the OLED panels.

Should you get an HDMI 2.1 monitor or an HDMI 2.1 TV?
For living room setups, go for a TV but for a desktop, you'll want to go with a monitor.
Both will offer you the same power of 4K output at 120Hz, but just at different screen sizes. TVs can also have additional creature comforts like an OLED panel to offer incredible contrast, for instance.

In short, yes. It looks like HDMI 2.1 can output at 144Hz and at 4K, hence why a lot of the monitors above support the refresh rate.
It is also worth noting that you can get 144Hz on HDMI 2.0 monitors, as long as they support the refresh rates. You can even get 240Hz on an HDMI signal, as long as you're willing to sacrifice some visual fidelity with 1080p or 1440p.
This is only true for PC gaming, of course, as next-gen consoles are of course working with 4K at 120Hz.
What Is 'Fake HDMI 2.1'?
Whilst we do have a separate guide on what fake HDMI 2.1 is, let's break things down a little.
Fake HDMI 2.1 in essence refers to a monitor that states it is HDMI 2.1 but doesn't feature what are understood to traditionally be HDMI 2.1 features.
Monitors may label themselves as being HDMI 2.1 but may not have features such as VRR or ALLM, which are traditionally associated with HDMI 2.1 monitors. VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate whilst ALLM refers to Auto-Low-Latency Mode.
Such features are optional when it comes to labeling a display as HDMI 2.1, which appears to be a consequence of HDMI 2.0 no longer 'existing' as a standard, so, therefore, all new monitors can be labeled as HDMI 2.1 without having the classic set of features.
Always make sure to do your own digging before committing to a monitor, to avoid disappointment.
Is DisplayPort faster than HDMI?
Truth be told, there isn't necessarily a concrete measure to find out whether DisplayPort is quicker than HDMI 2.1.
When looking at bandwidth, it's worth noting that HDMI 2.1 can carry more data than DP 1.4, but less than the emerging DP 2.0.
The actual response time and refresh rate of the output are arguably determined more by the monitor than the cable it's utilising, and in addition, the platform you're using will determine which port you'll be using.
Whilst DP can carry more bandwidth, it doesn't mean it's a faster connection than HDMI.
